Early Childhood Landscape Design

Designing outdoor learning environments for early childhood settings demands more than good landscape design. It requires regulatory knowledge, an understanding of licensed early childhood services, and genuine expertise in how young children learn through nature.

Botanical Traditions has been specialising in early childhood outdoor environments for over 15 years. We work with Architects, Councils, developers, and education providers across Melbourne and regional Victoria to deliver landscapes for kindergartens, early childhood hubs, long day care centres, and Childcare -  from Initial Concept through to Construction and beyond.

Our designs are grounded in deep horticultural knowledge and a clear understanding of what early learning landscapes must achieve. We design to the National Quality Framework and the Early Years Learning Framework, our work consistently addresses the specific technical requirements of licensed early childhood facilities: compliant outdoor space ratios, north-facing play areas, DDA accessible paths of travel, solar orientation, and integration with the Department of Education Service Approval pathway.

We bring experience in coordinating WSUD, ESD, and sustainability requirements within early childhood landscape projects. Our designs are nature-inspired, sensory-rich, and developmentally appropriate and they are buildable within budget.

Whether you are an Architect seeking a technically experienced landscape sub-consultant for a community hub or early childhood facility, a Council delivering early childhood infrastructure, or an operator planning to develop or upgrade your outdoor learning environment, we bring the specific knowledge and experience this work demands.

We would welcome the opportunity to discuss your project.
